More than a month ago now I announced my departure from Humax as their Chief Technologist. I have since been working for nice company doing some productisation work and while that has been interesting I have missed my colleagues at Humax. Recently I was called by my former Director, we had some discussions and after some careful negotiations I am returning to Humax. I am now to be a member of the development team and as part of this I will now be working more in Korea than before. It is a nice step-up for me and I hope I can input some valuable effort to the Humax development process. My departure from Humax was part of my personal development and I think it also gave a number of parties opportunities to consider approaches. This year is, so far, not only a good one for me but also I think this will be an important year for the companies I work with. The development of the YouView set-top boxes in partnership with the TV industry will be a minor revolution for the market place and Humax is well placed to take advantage of that through foresight and determination to lead the UK TV market. Furthermore I am also looking forward to working with freesat to bring their ambitions to fruition and I think that working together with them Humax can help their platform really evolve.

A little while ago I purchased a second hand Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo EVi 2535 Home Theatre PC which ran Vista and now runs Windows 7. I recently upgraded it from the original 1.86GHz Core2Duo processor and 2GB of RAM to have now a Q6600 quad core 2.4GHz processor and 4GB of RAM (using a Zalman fan to keep it at a good temperature. I also supplemented the on-board Intel graphics with an nVidia GeForce 210 graphics card with 512MB of GDDR2 RAM (capable of also sharing 1.1GB of system RAM). Overall the only thing left to upgrade is the noisy DVD drive tobe a quiet BluRay.
I wondered if I could do better than Windows 7 and so I looked towards Linux. I installed Kubuntu 8.10 easily enough, but getting the nVidia drivers working was a pain, then when I installed LinuxMCE it took me hours to try and resolve the dependencies. After this it finally launched, but got stuck in a loop because it didn’t install correctly and you can’t un-install it.
I then re-installed 8.10, in order to use MythTV and updated the OS to 9.04 as it suggested. Then I also had to have the nVidia packages installed and that was grief because the wifi refused to authenticate for most of the time I had allocated. Then when I got the nVidia drivers installed it started freezing at random. So, I removed the hard disk and returned to Windows 7. Windows MCE isn’t perfect and I like Linux as a server but overall I can’t live with dependencies like that.
I will continue to look at Linux and welcome any suggestions but overall I can’t spend days of my life just to get something not working.
Well, it’s been a while but we’ve been working on a new layout for the site. It is now ready so I have stepped out and bought it online.

So I continue on with social networking, it's something I have taken to much better than blogging if I confess. But I am prolific, I have a linked-in account, a Facebook account and an Xing account (the latter of which is rather stagnant at the moment). But I begin to realise that my business is now more and more about conglomerations of business contacts than it is about the company I work for.
Today I was asked about how someone would setup a particular broadcast network, then another time I am asked about if I could help someone with some other activity, then someone who would have been considered an arch-rival in business until recently calls and asks if we can provide them our technology (of course, at a price). It is all just contacts and clouds of people working together to achieve someone's goals.
But the networking is not just virtual, some of these deals happened on-line, others were the result of meeting someone at an event, but it's all just networking. Someone sees the potential in you and despite the traditional barriers they ask "for the good of my business I can work with this person".
